The {New York} Life: Art Exhibits

Art has always fascinated me and living in New York City, we are surrounded by it!  My friend Maria Brito is my art buddy – she and I share passion for Brazilian photographers with vivid photography of beaches of Brazil, Vic Munoz of Wasteland, and we both like the pop art of Andy Warhol and others of that era. {Read about Maria Brito}  I love the portraits for Great Expectations with Gwyneth Paltrow and Ethan Hawke by artist Francesco Clemente. My dream would be to have portraits of our Tyler and Sofia done like that one day!

This week, I’m looking forward to going to art class with my friend Sonya Chodry!  In honor of that, I thought I’d share with you some exhibits that are happening in the city right now.  Let’s all get into the art spirit!

Up Do / Jeff Bailey Gallery

Up Do is a group exhibition of sculpture and painting.  As imperative phrases, Up! and Do! are action-oriented, and suggest movement or performance. When combined, the words characterize an elaborate way to prepare one’s hair for a special occasion.  The artists in the exhibition demand something similar of their materials, pushing their physical limits and dressing them up for the event. Traditional materials like wood, stone, paper, metal, ceramic and paint may be combined with unexpected ones such as hair gel, mascara, vinyl, Mylar and concrete. baileygallery.com

The Rhythm of Color / the Agora Gallery

One of three exhibits featured this summer at the Agora Gallery in Chelsea, the Rythm of Color features work from seven artists who use color in unique ways.  Also see Degrees of Abstraction and Interpretive Realms while you’re here!  agora-gallery.com

Jean-Michael Othoniel: My Way / Brooklyn Museum

The Jean-Michael Othoniel exhibit runs from August 17th to December 2nd. It presents a complete look of the 25 year career of Jean-Michael Othoniel. What I’m looking forward to the most about this exhibit is that it’s not just one medium. There’s everything from works made of sulfur and wax to large-scale glass sculptures. I love being able to walk 360 degrees around a piece of art. brooklynmuseum.org

Josef Albers in America: Painting on Paper / The Morgan Library & Museum

This exhibit started July 20th and will run until October 14th. Josef Albers is best known for his series of paintings, Homage to the Square, where he explored color relationships through sequences of concentric squares. Most people don’t know he actually created studies for these and various other paintings in his career. The 60 oil sketches on paper will show a more private side of Albers’ work. These sketches were never exhibited during Albers’ lifetime and have rarely been seen since his death. This is a must see. themorgan.org

Behind the Screen / Museum of the Moving Image

If you want to experience a different kind of art museum this is it. The Behind the Screen exhibit is currently open and runs until December 31st. This is the Museum of the Moving Image’s core exhibit. You can put sound effects into film scenes, insert your voice into a part of The Wizard of Oz and even make a short animated film and email it to yourself. This is the perfect exhibit for movie and TV lovers. movingimage.us

It’s Always Summer on the Inside / Anton Kern Gallery

The It’s Always Summer on the Inside exhibit is currently open and will be on display until August 17th. The exhibit is comprised of 20 artists who work in an intuitive, direct and personal matter. The exhibition’s title was taken from an advertisement for surfing wetsuits in the 1970s and you can see this inspiration throughout all of the works. antonkerngallery.com

Enjoy these summer exhibits this month!  I’ll post the best of what to see this fall for you soon.  If you’re visiting Chelsea, use this handy Chelsea Gallery Map so you don’t miss a thing!
