The {Foodie} Life: Downtown’s 5 Hottest Restaurants

Dining out in New York is one of the things that make this the greatest city to live in!  No matter the occasion or the company, there is always a new place to try with your friends, family or date.  It always excites New Yorkers to have the best experiences in dining – and such variety – at our fingertips.

Here are my top 5 picks for the month:

The Nomad Hotel
It’s such a treat to bring someone here for an elegantly casual meal. I recently had lunch at The Nomad with a friend of mine from Edition01!  Inspired by Chef Daniel Humm’s time spent in Switzerland, California and New York, the cuisine is both traditional and innovative.  My favorite dish is the lobster: slow cooked with celery root, fennel and sauce vermouth.  A must try!

The General

The General
The best place for Chinese food downtown! Brett David manages this Lower East Side Modern Asian Cuisine spot, and Executive Chef Hung Huynh was the Top Chef Season 3 winner.  Try the Pow (spicy kind crab with mango sauce and wasabi honey) or The Smith (wasabi avocado mousse!), and don’t leave without dessert, the Sticky Coconut Cake is worth every calorie!

The Lion
For a great dinner in the West Village, check out The Lion!  I had dinner here recently with a group of Avenues moms, and it was such a fun night out with classic Italian-American cuisine from Executive Chef John DeLucie (the first celebrity chef to be given an MTV movie award), and a polished but relaxed atmosphere.  My friends and I enjoyed the Lacinato Tuscan Kale, the Ricotta Ngudi, and we loved the sides, especially the Spinach Parmesan Casserole. Order a la carte and share!

lafayette

Lafayette
Opened earlier this month, Noho’s new Lafayette is helmed by Chef Andrew Carmellini and restauranteurs Luke Ostrom and Josh Pickard.  Enjoy delicious french cuisine for lunch or dinner.  Try the Scallops a la Plancha with Spring Peas, Morels and Tarragon, and take something home from the bakery as well!
380 Lafayette Street, at the corner of Great Jones Street, New York, NY 10003 212-533-3000

Cherry

Cherry
The sexiest place in Chelsea, Cherry is a new sushi den below the Dream Hotel with a french inspired vibe and japanese cuisine.  Executive Chef Andy Choi and Executive Sushi Chef Joshua Bedell have rave reviews from New York Magazine, and my Avenues friends have been raving about this place too. I recommend the miso-glazed sea bass and butter-soft amberjack, and stay late for lounge cocktails!
