This past weekend our kids were happy to learn about an amazing organization that feeds approximately 1,000 people each day- the at the Holy Apostles Soup Kitchen in West Chelsea, which has been around since 1844!
It was to enlightening learn they support the local farmers and the food that is given to the less fortunate is not only healthy but is given by volunteers in the community daily.
We are grateful for Avenues Community Engagement Chairs, Cristina Enriquez-Bocobo & Bruce Cohen, for introducing us to this opportunity to help and lean about the Holy Apostles Soup Kitchen.
Our family was so uplifted and happy to be of service. I hope these photos will inspire more awareness. Read below about the mission & history of Holy Apostles, text courtesy of their website.
Mission
Our mission is to feed the hungry, comfort the afflicted, seek justice for the homeless, and provide a sense of hope and opportunity to those in need.
In addition to our food program, our committed staff and volunteers work with guests to ensure they are receiving full benefits, connect them to additional supportive services, help with job applications and even reunite them with family members.
Our ultimate goal is to empower our guests to experience a more manageable and fulfilling way of life.
History
On October 22, 1982, as a response to the increase in homelessness in Chelsea, Holy Apostles Soup Kitchen fed its first thirty five meals to hungry New Yorkers. Because of the dedication of volunteers, staff and generous donors, millions of meals have been served every week. In 2017, we honored all those who have helped keep our doors open for those most in need for 35 years.
