Family Fun for the Fall: What to Do With Kids in New York

All talk this week has turned to fall.  All over the city (and beyond!) there are kid-friendly activities that the whole family will love.  From art and history to picking and playing, these will keep you busy all season.

{ Jazzed! The Changing Beat of 125th Street }

The Children’s Museum of Manhattan, partnered with the National Jazz Museum in Harlem, has created an exhibit that encourages children to interactively learn about the history of the jazz genre and how it came to shape New York’s Harlem Renaissance. Kids can interactively learn to scat, tap, and swing like legendary performers of the day! You can find a detailed list of daily Jazzed! Programs and Saturday performances from now until December 31 here.

{ Cirque Alfonso presents Timbre! }

Timber! is unlike your ordinary circus. With performances by three generations of acrobats, kiddos will be entertained with gravity-defying lumberjack-themed acrobatics and Canadian folk tunes performed by local band. This spectacular will be held at the Skirball Center for Performing Arts, October 14 – 19.

{ Haunted High Line Halloween }

Perfect for all ages, costumes are encouraged and fun and spooky Fall activities abound. Children can partake in face painting, create crafts, explore a haunted train tunnel made by the School of Visual Arts and more! The festival will be held Saturday, October 25 from 11a – 3p.

{ The Haunted Pumpkin Garden }

Through October 31 New York Botanical Garden hosts its annual tradition The Haunted Pumpkin Garden, where children of all ages can experience the adventures of Halloween. Daily activities include parades along trails of hand-carved sculptures of pumpkins and gourds, staging puppet shows, and scavenger hunts. Halloween readings and more can be enjoyed on weekends, as well as an after-hours Trick-or-Treat Trail, if you dare!

{ Pumpkins and Apples in Watermill }

The Hamptons aren’t only for the summer!  Bring the family out to Hank’s Pumpkintown in Watermill to this family owned farm for pumpkin and apple picking, tasty treats, mazes, wagon rides, and more.  The Milk Pail is another Watermill spot with lots of family picking and a beautiful market for great local fall foods.
