There are restaurants you try once—and then there are places you find yourself returning to, again and again. For me lately, that place has been Marcel.
I’ve been a few times already—bringing clients, meeting friends—and each visit feels slightly different, which is exactly the point. It’s not just a restaurant. It’s a setting that evolves, where the energy shifts depending on who you’re with, what’s on the walls, and even the time of day.
A Restaurant Set Inside an Icon

Located inside the iconic Breuer Building on Madison Avenue, now the global headquarters of Sotheby’s, Marcel brings a new dimension to the auction house experience. Named after architect Marcel Breuer, the space honors its architectural legacy while introducing a fresh, design-forward energy.
Designed by Roman and Williams, the interiors strike a balance between warmth and structure—rich walnut paneling, mohair banquettes, and custom bronze lighting layered against the building’s original concrete geometry. It feels intimate, yet undeniably architectural.
Surrounded by Art—And Opportunity

What sets Marcel apart is the way art is fully integrated into the experience. Works by artists like Andy Warhol, Joan Mitchell, and Alexander Calder currently line the walls, alongside curated vitrines showcasing jewelry, rare objects, and collectibles.
Unlike a traditional gallery or museum, the collection is constantly evolving—and more importantly, accessible. Many of the pieces are tied to upcoming auctions or private sales, offering guests a rare opportunity to engage with art not just as observers, but as potential collectors.
A Menu Rooted in French Tradition

At the heart of the restaurant is chef Marie-Aude Rose, whose Parisian influence shapes a menu built on classic French cuisine. The approach is refined but not overly complicated—focused on quality, balance, and execution.

Dishes like duck confit, côte de boeuf, and delicate tartines feel timeless, while subtle modern touches keep the experience current. It’s the kind of menu that complements the setting rather than competes with it.
Beyond the Dining Room

Marcel extends beyond its main dining space into a series of layered experiences. The bar channels a polished, old New York energy with an impressive wine program curated in partnership with Sotheby’s Wine. Outside, the sculpture garden has been reimagined as an alfresco dining space, offering a quieter, more relaxed setting.

There’s also La Mercerie Patisserie, an adjoining café serving pastries and light fare—perfect for a more casual visit or a quick stop during the day.
Food That Complements the Experience

In a city filled with standout restaurants, Marcel offers something rare. It’s not just about the food, or even the design—it’s about the intersection of worlds. Art, hospitality, and collecting come together in a way that feels natural, not forced.
It’s a space that invites curiosity. You come for dinner, but you stay for the experience.
Final Thoughts
Marcel ultimately captures something very specific to New York—the seamless overlap between culture, commerce, and experience. It’s not just about where you dine, but what surrounds you, what you discover, and what you might take home with you. In a city that thrives on access and perspective, Marcel offers both—quietly, beautifully, and in a way that lingers long after the table is cleared.
