BROADWAY BUZZ | MARVIN’S ROOM

In a time when Broadway is quiet, the Roundabout Theatre Company doesn’t stop producing high-quality theatre; this time, bringing Scott McPherson’s award-winning play, Marvin’s Room, to Broadway for the first time. Under the expert direction of Anne Kauffman, this funny play shows the viewer that even in life’s darkest moments, laughter can shine through.

Marvin’s Room tells the story of Bessie, a gentle woman who gave up her life to take care of her terminally ill father, and her Aunt Ruth, an eccentric woman with ailments of her own. When Bessie receives a bleak diagnosis at the doctor’s office, she is forced to reach out for help from her estranged sister Lee, who has plenty of trouble of her own.

Scott McPherson’s play is wonderfully poignant and sharp; it is a wonder it hasn’t been on Broadway before today. McPherson brilliantly handles a tough subject matter with wit and humor. Lili Taylor and Celia Weston’s performances as Bessie and Ruth were standouts in this talented cast. Taylor’s portrayal of Bessie is nuanced and confident, while Celia’s portrayal of Aunt Ruth is utter perfection. Other highlights were the performances by young actors Jack DiFalco and Luca Padovan as Lee’s (portrayed by comedian Janeane Garofalo) young boys.
